Motivation Theories- Content Theory- Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

What is the motivation? Motivation can be defined as a quality from which a person can achieve his goal. It is a necessary part of the life of a human being. Without this, no progress is possible as it keeps us in the right track. It gives us the energy to follow a path when there is nothing going right in your life.

What are the motivation theories? It deals with the processes of why and how human behavior is activated. These theories explain the working of the human being in a society. How does a person act in a particular situation? There are two types of motivation theories: i) content theories ii) process theories. Content theories deal with the needs of the people that direct their behavior. Process theories deal with how an entity changes and developed.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, a motivation theory that was developed by Abraham Maslow in 1943. What is the hierarchy? It is developed according to the relative status they have. This means that everything goes in a logical sequence, one leads to another in a logical manner. What are the needs? It is a thing necessary to live in a society. It can be positive as well as negative, deficiency of it leads to negative consequences. There are many different types, but the top ten needs that are required to a person, ranging from idleness to perfection.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, focused mainly on the stages of the growth of human development. These needs are shown in a pyramid by Maslow which shows that the basic needs at the lower level and the need for being are at the top of the pyramid.

At the lower level contains Physiological needs, these are the basic needs required by a person. These are the needs of air, water, food, shelter, clothing, reproduction, and sleep etc. This deals with the things we need in our daily routine. These are in short all the required needs for the survival of humans.

Second are the Safety needs that is the needs to keep ourselves safe. It deals with personal security, employment, resources, health, property and so many. Safety is needed to keep people safe inwardly and it makes them confident. It is that people would know what is right and wrong for them.

Third is the Love and belongings, these are also called as the social needs to live in a society. It is that people should feel that they are accepted and believed by the people of their society and that they have to belong with each other. This deals with love, friendship, hate, family, sense of connection and so many.

Fourth is Esteem, it deals with the self that how one is going to know his self. It deals with respect, self-esteem, status, strength, freedom and so many. It deals with the fact that if you are going to give respect to others ultimately you are going to have it back, this leads to your self-satisfaction. These changes and challenges as it grows and helps us in achieving successful results.

Fifth and last one in the pyramid is Self-actualization, which is the desire to become what we are? It includes the top of morality that is you are allowed to show self-expression and your best of values. It evokes the creativity in a person and to become critical. This becomes the long-term achievements of a person that stays by his personality all the time.

In the end, I would conclude that according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, self-actualization has greater intensity. As it is to know what a man is. What is his purpose of being in this world? When a person realizes his/her being and answers all the questions present in his/her inner self, he/she can achieve self-actualization. As physiological needs are the basic needs that everyone has but self-actualization has been achieved through struggle and it leads to useful results.
