A society is comprised of men and women with their distinctive and distinguishable aptitudes and abilities. Almost every society on the verge of death is masculine and men directed. Both, men and women, are integral part of every society but what happens in our society is that men participate in social activities while women are confined to the four walls of their house. Women are not allowed to participate in social activities. As a matter of fact, social activities and social life is restricted to men only. We prohibit a society’s progress by prohibiting women’s participation in its social activities. Mao Zedong said
“In order to build a great socialist society, it is the utmost importance to arouse the broad masses of women to join in productive activities. Men and women must receive equal pay for equal work in production. Genuine equality between the sexes can only be realized in the process of the socialist transformation of society as a whole”.
The role of women in the social development is very important because it is only through the participation of women along with the participation of men that a society can attain perfection. It is often said that women are the backbone of a society which is true to large extent because women’s full and equal participation, in all the aspects of social, public and private life, makes a society strong, sustainable, harmonious, peaceful and successful. Three fields are included in public and social life. These are:
- Employment or activities related to finance and economy of society
- Social activities including education and social work in NGO’S
- Political activities
Some people are obsessed with the idea that women cannot participate in social life and social activities and they should confine themselves to domestic affairs only. Such people are of the view that instead of engaging themselves in the social activities, women should give birth to child, bring him up, and offer him to the society. To reject such kind of opinions about women, we find some evidences from Holy Quran and Hadith that no trade and social profession other than whoredom is forbidden and prohibited for women. We all know that Hazrat Khadija R.A, the wife of our beloved Holy Prophet P.B.U.H, was a well-known tradeswoman. she was, later, married to Holy Prophet P.B.U.H. If trade or any other social profession was prohibited for women, the wife of our Holy Prophet B.P.U.H would have never done it. Moreover, some people are opinionated that we should not get our girls educated, because education is something mandatory for boys only. Such people do not allow girls around them to get education. For such people, I would like to mention that our Holy Prophet P.B.U.H was concerned for the education of women as much as he was concerned for the education of men. Holy Prophet P.B.U.H said
“Acquisition of knowledge is binding on all Muslims (both men and women without any discrimination)”. [Narrated by Ibn Maja in al-Sunan, 1:81 §224.
Women’s participation in social activities bring about awareness in them about their rights and their place in the society. And this awareness is resulted in change; a positive social change. Change is what we all seek, yet it is a door that no one wants to open. We all hope for a positive change in our society but on one takes a step towards that change. We are doing nothing to bring that change. In fact, we prohibit women’s participation in social life and its activities but in reality, women’s participation in social activities along with the men’s participation is the only way to lead our society to the perfection of a strong, harmonious, peaceful and successful society. As our great leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah said
“No struggle can ever succeed without women participating side by side with men”.
So, let our society make progress by letting women participate in social activities.
