HUNGER IN PAKISTAN AND ITS RECTIFICATION

Huger is a common intestinal reflex and body signal of low energy level in all living beings but the difference lies in its gratification. Some people have more than enough food for the satisfaction of hunger pangs and some constantly fail to satisfy them. Some walk to consume their food and some walk around to search even dried bread. There lies no humanity if we sleep with gratified belly and someone else fails to let his children asleep with their empty stomachs.

BREAD, CLOTHINGS AND SHELTER are the basic needs of mankind but unfortunately more than 700 million people are deprived of them in world. Pakistan is ranked at 106th level out of 119 countries on GHI scale in the survey of 2018 with the score of 32.6.

Muslims with a religion of humanity, sacrifice, brotherhood and generosity are unable to realize dilemma of 24.3% of population of Pakistan. Islam has provided the concept of zaqat, sadqa or charity and lesson of sacrifice through Eid-ul-Azha and Ramadan to ingrain sense of equality among rich and poor.

When asked about the best aspects of Islam, Holy Prophet (PBUH) replied:

“Feeding people and greeting those you know and those you do not know”
(Bukhari)

Being a Muslim and a human being first, our responsibility is to eradicate hunger from world. Here are some simple suggestions for rectification of hunger from our society. These suggestions could be followed by an individual of any age and status.

1. Make a saving box:

Once you make it you will realize how many coins you have wasted and how many people you have let starved. Followings are the sources to fill this box:

  • A coin you get back after purchase of 99 rupees.
  • Sale out dried bread, empty bottles and tins for recycling and let the money in the box.
  • Charity your family or you wish to give when needy ones are not around you.
  • Money you find out on way without possessor.

2.Look for deserving people:

A serious dilemma of our society is unequal distribution of money among people. There are some professional baggers or some obvious needy people who are always preferred by everyone for charity, resulting in deprivation and starvation of hidden more deserving people. Assure before doing charity that the person is the most deserving one. Do visits to backward areas and see their miseries. They are much more deserving people.

3.Best use of charity:

Tao Tzu – a Chinese philosopher says:
“Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.”

It is the best way of vanishing starvation from society. If you are not rich enough to establish business for others then you should let your community or society to do it collectively. Help others by giving them opportunity of earning so they may not be dependent anymore.

4.Remove a dish from dining table:

It is a simple step to gratify the hunger of at least one family provided by Islam is the following words:

“When you make some soup, make a good amount by adding plenty of liquid and give some to your neighbors”

Think about your menu at dining table. If there are many dishes daily then remove one dish and let it on the dining table of some hungry neighbor.

Even if there is one dish on dining table for each three times a day then check your menu for a week. Add a dish on weekly bases in your menu for poor or replace an expensive dish with cheap one for you so that the savings can fill an empty belly of someone around you.

5.Reassess your menu in restaurants:

Restaurants are often points of extravagances for youth. Money spent by couple of friends can sometimes provide food to a poor family for many weeks. Please think about 24.9% people of Pakistan before making an order. Eat simple food. Even it would be a nice step to avoid potato fingers and let that money in saving box.

6.Make space in your wardrobe:

Purchase less or donate extra dresses, shoes and other outfits so that poor may not have to spend money on their clothing. This may enable them to satisfy hunger of their family.

7.Spare 2- 10% of your income:

  • If you are independent then donate some money.
  • If you are not independent still try to save pocket money for those who have no concept of pocket money.
  • Use your talent to earn money and donate it e.g. Inspiredtrait provides you this opportunity.

8.Encourage others:

If you are unable to help others or if you are motivated enough then encourage others to do charity form removal of hunger and poverty. Use your family, colleagues and friends circles for expanding your campaign against hunger. Social media is suitable source for wide range campaign.

Lastly, keep the following sayings of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) in mind while spending money:

Allah Almighty will say on the Day of Resurrection “O son of Adam, I asked you for food and you fed Me not. He will say: O Lord and how should I feed you when you are the Lord of the worlds? He will say: Did you not know that My servant so and so asked you for food and you fed him not? Did you not know that had you fed him you would surely have found that with Me?”
