How to write a cover letter?

In addition to a CV, some companies also require a cover letter attached with it. A cover letter is also a person’s introduction and the way he introduces himself paves his way for the job. An effective cover letter communicates a person’s qualifications, skills and experiences very well.

There are some important points which are to be kept in mind while writing a cover letter:
  1. It must contain the same information as in the CV.
  2. It must state the reason why it is written.
  3. It should be short and concise, unnecessary information should be avoided.Its tone should be formal.
  4. Its tone should be formal.

    When you’re conscious about the above stated points, you can start writing your cover letter!

    First of all, you have to choose a format. It can be full block form or semi block form, also you have to decide whether you’ll use indentated or non indentated paragraphs. The letter can be punctuated, open punctuated or mix punctuated.

    The cover letter is completed in three parts:

    First part is the opening. In this part, address of the applicant is written on top right or left corner of the page and date right below it. Then leave a space and write the receiver’s address, either right below the above address (block form) or below on the other side of the page (semi block form). Then come the salutations, you can address the receiver either by name (Dear Mr.Peter) or by designation (Dear Manager). Opening is completed here.

    Second part contains the body of the letter. This is the most important part of the letter, as it contains the information you have conveyed in order to be considered for the job. The body should have three or four paragraphs. The first paragraph should convey the reason youbare writing and the source from where you came to know about the job. In second paragraph, list down your qualifications, personal data and references (not always required, and in the third paragraph, show your willingness to take the job and request for an interview. Also, tell the employer how he can contact you.

    The last part is closing of the letter. Close the letter by writing yours sincerely/truly/faithfully etc. either right below the addresses (block form) or on the other side (semi block form) of the page. Leave 2-3 spaces and write your full name below and do your signatures in the space. Your cover letter is ready! Review it before posting.
